Pell City, AL was founded in 1890 and named after Jonathan H Pell of the Pell City Iron and Land Company. It was incorporated on May 6, 1891 and was brought to prominence in 1902 by Sumter Cogswell who built the Pell City Manufacturing Company which became Avondale Mills. The mill was the economic and social center of the town during its early growth and development. Besides the mill, there were mercantile establishments, large cotton, soybean, and cattle farms throughout the area. Pell City increased in size in 1956 when the nearby towns of Eden and Oak Ridge were merged with Pell City, AL.
In 1964, the geography surrounding Pell City, AL, changed dramatically with the formation of Logan Martin Lake. The process including damning up of the Coosa River, overtaking Avondale Lake, absorbing Clear Creek and Choccolocco Creek. During this process, the town of Easonville, AL, which was due south of Pell City, AL, was flooded and became part of Logan Martin Lake in 1965 by Alabama Power Company.
Having moved here at the age of five in 1970 was the best thing that ever happened to my family and I. It was a great pleasure growing up with great friends whose parents were like second dads and moms. The security and loved shown by this community was abundant and never forgotten. Even though the town has grown, it hasn't lost that small town feel and is very welcoming of newcomers that eventually turn into extended family members. If you have never had the experience of visiting Pell City, I personally invite you to come and see all of its great attributes. The economy is bustling, home prices are reasonable, and resale is incredible.
